Black glazed ceramic bowl with oil drops. Also known as Tenmoku bowls, or Jian Zhan ("bowl of Jianyang kilns").

This Jian Zhan is made by Chen Xu, one of the most innovative and well-known Jian Zhan masters of the young generation in China. Two of his Jian Zhan were collected by the Oriental Ceramic Museum Osaka in Japan. His studio and kiln are located in Shuiji, city of Jianyang, where Jian Zhan has tranditionally been made since Song dynasty. He uses exclusively local clay and glaze raw materials for his works.

This gorgeous Jian Zhan belongs to the family of oil drop glaze. The spots that are scattered all over the black glaze look similar to oil drops. The reddish metallic gloss around the oil drops is splendid and flickering. The absolute highlight of this Jian Zhan: wenn placed in the sun and rotated, the gloss around the oil drops appears colorful, like oyster.

Due to the transmutation in the kiln, each Jian Zhan looks different, hence each Jian Zhan is unique.
